In this series of videos, you can get a sense of what is it like for the California Air National Guard pilots as they battle the Rim Fire in Yosemite. As of Monday afternoon, AP reported that the fire had consumed 230 square miles, making it the largest fire on record in the Sierra Nevada.

Nearly 3,700 firefighters are on the scene to fight the blaze, which is only about 15 percent contained.

Although horrible: i’d rather see this kind of destruction than any kind of violence from humans.

Just think how many 747′s and/or DC10′s we could have for fighting forest fires, if we didn’t blew all of our money on unnecessary, stupid wars.

    Wouldn’t that be nice?

Not sure if you are aware there are two DC 10′s in use these days to fight fires. One lost an engine here in Idaho fighting the Beaver Creek fire, but has since been repaired.

Did you see the video of the 747 that is a fire retardant bomber?

That is what we need more of, big planes that can cary large loads and stay in the air for long periods of time.

Do Helicopter pilots also take water from the lakes and big water holes we see the planes flying over in some of the videos? There must quite some lakes in the burnt out areas to take water from or is that not done? It would safe fuel and time would it not?
