The shores of Lake Merritt were the site of a celebration this Sunday that marked 100 years since California gave women the right to vote, 9 years earlier than the 19th Amendment granted women suffrage nationwide.
Oakland Local was there and captured some photos of the spirited gathering (hat lovers take note -- lots of millinery skills were on display.)

Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan attended the event, which also acknowledged the relative high number of women working in Oakland's government. Quan is one of only eight female mayors in the United State's 100 largest cities.
