Chances are you’ve spotted the bright, vibrant colors out of the corner of your eye, splashed across the wall by graffiti artists for everyone to see, but are these pieces a form of art or an act of vandalism? Within the past couple of weeks, students across the nation discussed the value of graffiti in our #DoNowGraffiti post. We asked students, Describe the graffiti you see in your community. What stands out to you about it? Take a picture of graffiti art in your town and tweet it to us with your thoughts. Is it valuable? Do you want to see more or less graffiti in your neighborhood? What makes graffiti “good” or “bad”?

Our esteemed contest judge, artist Sirron Norris, and all of us at KQED were impressed by KC’s excellent rendering of her favorite historical figure, Johannes Gutenberg.

Within the past couple of weeks, students across the nation discussed whether or not a selfie is a form of creative expression or narcissism in our #DoNowSelfies post. Would you consider them an updated version of the artistic self portrait, visual communication, or something else?

In the last two weeks, students across the country discussed how certain songs impact their lives in our #DoNowSong post. We asked students What are some of the best lyrics written and why are they meaningful to you? If you were to write a song, what would it be about?
We are big fans of San Francisco artist Sirron Norris featured him in an Art School episode about his work as a painter and animator. Youth media producers at BayCat are also admirers of Sirron’s work, and we recently discovered this terrific video interview with the artist where he discusses the details in his murals, his dog Rosie, the difference between street art and graffiti, and his personal history.
Teachers attended the Integrated Learning Summer Institute at Chabot Space and Science Center over the summer, and many of them created their own short films with the help of education specialists from KQED and SFMOMA.
