Leslie SbroccoMy name is Leslie Sbrocco and I’m the host of Check, Please! Bay Area. Each week, I will be sharing my tasting notes about the wine the guests and I drank on set during the taping of the show. I will also share some wine tips with each episode.

2012 Domaine Gerovassiliou, Epanomi, Greece ($16) — Greek wines are getting attention these days for their exotic flavors and high quality. This unique white blends two indigenous white Greek grape varieties, Assyrtiko and Malagousia. Crisp and refreshing, it has a lush texture and succulent citrus fruit notes. Perfect with Greek tomato and feta salad and grilled seafood, it also shines with Japanese cuisine. It’s an absolutely delicious discovery.

2011 St. Amant, Old Vine Zinfandel “Mohr-Fry Ranch” Lodi, California ($18) — Lodi is a hot spot when it comes to world-class Zinfandel. This is one of my favorite expressions of the variety. Spicy, peppery and chock full of wild berry fruit flavors but still capturing a sense of elegance. Barbeque ribs and Kobe beef burgers are my dream dates when uncorking this delicious red.

    I don’t care for veggie food, but I seen a possible rerun episode of a woman who bashed an excellent restaurant Joe’s of Westlake and reason is she wants vegetable foods. The thing is I want apples with apples, oranges with oranges, she is anti meat, although her place was Roy’s a fish place; she really is bias towards more non meat foods. I wonder if that girl, her name was Patricia likes these three choices, all three have a vegetarian dish. Really this segment is great for any veggie lover to see that there are several options. Some day when I can, I may sign up to be a guest.

    One of the problems with this show is that when a guest recommends a restaurant, they never tell the others what dish(es) they recommend until filming. Then you get the typical responses like “I didn’t see that,” or “I should have tried that,” and the the typical response: “Next time, come with me.” Every show has a variation of one of these comments. The person who recommends the restaurant should at least give the others at the CPBA dish recommendations beforehand – or at least 1-2 of their favorites from that restaurant. Choosing those actual dishes, up to the others.

    You know what? I think they are told what to order, then the person recommending the place knows already what to order. In my case, I almost always know what to order at my selected place. It’s unfair because any where you go has a bad section on the menue.

    As a guest from the show, I can assure you that we are not instructed on what to order. I think the idea is to “go as you are” and order what you would normally order and then go from there. :)

    Another great Lodi Zinfandel producer is Macchia. Try their Adventurous Zin for a spicy well balanced Zin!
