KQED Public Radio in Sacramento 89.3FM Broacasting at 15% Power

October 24, 2013 · Filed Under KQED, KQED Public Radio Sacramento, KQEI · Comment

KQED Public Radio serving Sacramento/North Highlands on 89.3 FM is now broadcasting at just 45 Watts of power. KQED is investigating the cause of this morning’s total interruption but it appears that a back-hoe, not operated by KQED, accidentally severed its main power lines at the transmitter site. Live streaming for the Sacramento area was not affected — kqed.org/listen.

KQED/KQEI chief engineer Larry Wood reports that he has been able to draw on back-up power to bring the KQEI transmitter back on line at very reduced power which limits 89.3 FM reception. The station will not be operating at full power until the Sacramento Municipal Utility District restores the power line to the North Highlands transmitter site.
