Quick Read: HIV Linked to Higher Chance of Heart Attack

Since HIV has become a chronic condition, one that patients live with for decades, researchers have begun turning to the maladies that afflict people as they age. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S., and this study showed that HIV positive men have a higher risk of heart attack.


Researchers aren’t sure what explains the higher heart attack rate in HIV-positive people, but they speculate it’s a combination of the effects of HIV itself and the antiretroviral drugs used to treat it.
