In the waning days of NUMMI, some would-be electric car manufacturers are coming forward with proposals to take over the plant, contingent on the generous help of the federal government and/or Toyota.
Aurica Motors of Santa Clara says it's talking with NUMMI. Launched by a Silicon Valley physicist, Aurica has been working over the past four years on a system that would make electric cars travel farther on the same battery charge. The product is still a prototype and the company has yet to make a sale. Aurica's general manager tells AutoWeek.com it wants to "branch into" auto manufacturing partly as an outlet for its drive train technology.
Commenter David Taylor tells us nXe Energy made a pitch at a recent local UAW meeting, urging the union to join the company in its bid to take over the plant. As a condition of the purchase, the Department of Energy would need to guarantee a $500 million dollar loan, and Toyota would need to agree to continue operating the plant for at least one year, to give nXe Energy time to ramp up.
A spokesman for Toyota says these are questions for NUMMI to answer. A spokesman for NUMMI tells the Oakland Tribune "While we appreciate their interest in NUMMI, there has not been an opportunity for productive discussions with Aurica ...We are not sure whether their proposal is viable." nXe? I've put in calls about that proposal, and am waiting to hear back from NUMMI and the UAW Local 2244.
5.5 million square feet is a lot of square feet to fill. Bear in mind that Tesla - a company with an actual track record manufacturing electric cars - anticipates requiring something about a fifth of the size. Which may explain why Tesla's not planning to take over the Fremont facility.

1. Why? are we requesting “NUMMI” team members only. ANSWER We can take advantge of the training that they have hadunder the Toyota programs .
2. You are not building cars. Nummi is not the only company that incorporates the “POD” “Cell” methods.
ANSWER: Your are correct, but with NUMMI Team Members we do not have to go through the screening process with other prospective candidates.
3. Is there a government or other financial incentive for hiring NUMMI team members? NO
4. What if you don’t get enough NUMMI team members? Others will be recruited and integrated into a proven team.

Its apparent that you are uninformed on how a business “STARTS UP”. You see what you want to see. It is a well thought out business approach that didn’t happen overnight. You would be amazed to find out how many of the TOP multi-billion dollar companies “STARTED UP”!

History is being written by the way nXe Energy is engaging its business plan. Hopefully nXe will end up like many startup giants of today in our area such as up Apple Computer, that began working from Steve Wozniak one of the Founder’s parent’s residential garage, Oracle a giant today that began in an office that had to be abandoned for lack of funds and continued working from the Founder’s Larry Ellison’s apartment. Oracle paid its team members with stock and stock options that made them all very wealthy.
Consider that Microsoft began in an old non- renovated run down bowling alley in
New Mexico. Founders Bill Gates, Paul Allen and others stayed on the job full time by sleeping in sleeping bags on the floor. Not forgetting how the famous HP began from a residential detached garage that they proudly advertise today.
nXe Energy developed it’s technology from a temporary leased jointly occupied fully equipped and staffed precision computerized machine shop. nXe now is in the position to take it’s green energy technology into production. History is being made because seldom if ever before has a group such as the 3500 Former NUMMI Team Members are in the process of joining together after being fire tested with the adversity of losing their long term high paying jobs in time of a major recession in one of the highest unemployment area’s of the country.
