Prop. 8 Lawyer Wins GOP Assembly Nod

Andrew Pugno, the attorney and prime media spokesman for Proposition 8 easily won the Republican nomination for a Sacramento Area Assembly seat on election day. Pugno won 44% of the vote, easily beating out five other candidates. In November, Pugno will face Democrat Richard Pan, a UC Davis physician. The 5th Assembly District includes parts of Sacramento and Placer Counties -- suburban cities like Folsom and Citrus Heights where Republicans do well. The current Assemblyman, Republican Roger Niello, is termed out. The pro-gay marriage group Equality California wasted no time sending out a fund raising pitch ... warning that a Pugno victory in November will lead to "a slew of toxic, anti-LGBT proposals that will take significant work to defeat. Of course, even if Pugno wins there's no guarantee he'd introduce such legislation ... and even if he did there's virtually no chance it would even get out of committee, much less make it to the governor's desk (whether it's Jerry Brown or Meg Whitman). Still -- it's great red meat for fund raising efforts.
