Partners with Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University, Expands Multi-Touch Science Book Collection
More than seven million iPads are being used in U.S. schools and institutions. KQED, the public media organization serving Northern California, is at the forefront of this edu-tech revolution with the production of iBooks Textbooks that feature dynamic science and media resources from KQED and its partners. The books are designed for ease of use by teachers and students in both formal and informal learning settings.
The latest e-book from KQED is a free iBooks Textbooks series on energy. Energy: The Basics and Energy: Use and Efficiency enhance energy literacy by tackling provocative and complicated science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects. The Energy iBooks Textbooks and accompanying iTunes U course were created by KQED in partnership with the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University. They align with the “Energy Literacy: Essential Principals and Fundamental Concepts of Energy Education,” published by the U.S. Department of Energy. KQED’s new Energy books were developed for high school teachers and students, although anyone can enjoy reading and learning from them.
The Energy books expand KQED’s Multi-Touch science book collection, which includes Biotechnology, Earthquake and River Delta. iBooks Textbooks from KQED also have accompanying iTunes U courses with educational activities to deepen understanding of topics covered in the books. Both the books and the courses are also designed to support the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Energy: The Basics provides a vibrant, interactive platform for investigating the nature of energy and energy resources.
•Engaging videos, animations and in-depth articles give the reader the foundation to understand what energy is and where it comes from.
•Career spotlight videos also give students a behind-the-scenes glimpse of diverse jobs in the renewable energy industry, supporting STEM workforce development.
•The 55-page book is divided into two chapters: The Science of Energy and Energy Resources.
Energy: Use and Efficiency explores how humans use energy — from generating electricity to developing energy efficient technologies.
•High-quality videos, interactive elements, and explanatory text provide students with real-world examples of human energy use, and its applications now and in the future.
•The 40-page book is divided into three chapters: Human Energy Use, Electricity and the Grid, and Energy Efficiency.

The iBooks Textbooks collection from KQED includes:
• Biotechnology, which explores the basics of biotechnology and how developments in the field impact our lives, our health and future innovations.
• Earthquake, created in partnership with the California Academy of Sciences, examines the science behind earthquakes and the forces that shape our planet.
• River Delta, developed in partnership with the East Bay Regional Park District, dives into the diverse ecosystem of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, and its complex engineering and water use issues that affect natural resources, people and wildlife.
