Update 12:30 p.m.

(BCN)A man who may have been toting stolen goods in a car was struck  and killed on Interstate Highway 280 after a crash in Daly City this morning,  according to a California Highway Patrol officer.

The incident started around 5:30 a.m. when a two-vehicle crash was  reported on northbound Highway 280 near the John Daly Boulevard off-ramp, CHP  Officer Michael Ferguson said.

A man in a GMC lost control of his vehicle and hit the center  divide. A Honda Civic with a female driver then hit the stalled car, Ferguson  said.

The Honda driver was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with  a complaint of pain. She is expected to survive her injuries, the officer  said.

The driver of the GMC got out of the car and tried to run away and  ran across northbound lanes. According to witnesses, he realized he was above  city streets and then ran back to the center divide, Ferguson said.

Once back, someone who had pulled over to help tried to tell the  man to stay out of the road. The GMC driver got in a confrontation with the  Good Samaritan and jumped over the center divide into a southbound lane,  Ferguson said.

He was then struck by a car and killed, Ferguson said. Other  vehicles also hit him.

A car that struck him did not initially stop at the scene, but the  CHP believes the driver did not know that a person was hit and authorities  will not be pressing charges, Ferguson said.

Anyone who was driving in that area at that time is asked to  contact the CHP, he said.

Ferguson said there appears to be stolen goods in the GMC and in  the possession of the deceased driver, whose name is not yet being released.

After the fatality, all southbound lanes were shut down and two  northbound lanes closed.

The northbound lanes opened around 7:45 a.m. and one southbound  lane was opened.

All lanes reopened just before 11 a.m., Ferguson said.

Update 10:40 a.m. From CHP: Severe traffic alert and emergency road closure continues on I-280 southbound between San Jose Ave (San Francisco) and John Daly Blvd (Daly City). Left and center lanes closed until 1 PM.
