Photos: The End of the Road for the Bay Bridge’s Eastern Span
A wall of fog fell across the Bay Bridge minutes before the last cars would pass over on Wednesday night. It was the final curtain call for a span that had connected the East Bay to Treasure Island for decades.
By Thursday morning, workers already had started to demolish part of the old Bay Bridge and pave the way to connect the new span. The bridge will reopen by 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Drivers faced heavy traffic on alternative bridges Thursday morning. BART and ferry riders reported a relatively smooth commute despite a higher volume of riders.Related
