Danny MacAskill is a professional bike trials rider from Scotland. (Image: YouTube)

Until 20 minutes ago, I’d never heard of Danny MacAskill, and, despite a long history of international bike trips, I’d never heard of the sport “bike trials” either.

The site biketrials.com isn’t positive how the name came about but explains the sport this way:

Bike trials is a sport in which one’s bike skills are tested. They are tested through a series of sections, or trials.

Bike trials practitioners lose points if any part of their body touches the ground during the trial. But that’s only part of it. It’s a precise and beautiful endeavor — and it’s on a bike. MacAskill apparently has some kind of celebrity endorsement with Remington. They present this short, slickly produced film/commercial, shot in San Francisco.

FYI MacAskill’s Scottish brogue is compelling if not entirely intelligible.

If you like this you should see some of the stuff he did “back home” in this video from 2010. Not that I don’t like the San Francisco scenery, but his home has a different feel to it. Either way, he’s pretty incredible.

Danny is a big star in the UK, where he was one of the torch bearers for the Summer Olympics. He has a couple of really great videos filmed in Scotland, which likely required weeks of filming. I think the San Francisco video was filmed in just a couple of days and it kind of shows. His other stuff is easy to find on YouTube.

A friend shot video of Danny doing his amazing trials riding, posted it to YouTube and the video went viral. It wasn’t long before he started getting endorsement deals like this Remington commercial. I think this is his first video outside of Europe.

Trials rider Ryan Leech is a regular at the Sea Otter Festival in Monterey, if you want to see this stuff in person. Hans “No Way” Rey is the guy who pioneered trials with his stunt riding in Southern California in the early 90s. You can find video of them both at YouTube.
