A network of high-tech surveillance cameras programmed to detect unusual behavior and alert authorities will be installed in the Muni Metro subway system. The $3.6 million project, to be installed over five years starting next summer, will be found inside the stations and at the portals of the subway tunnels.

The Alameda County District Attorney declined to file charges against seven of nine Occupy the Farm protesters arrested at UC Berkeley's Gill Tract in Albany "in the interest of justice," a spokeswoman for the Alameda County District Attorney said Thursday. A ballot measure that would tax car rental companies in unincorporated areas to pump $8 million a year into San Mateo County's budget is holding onto a slim lead for approval, according to updated election results released Thursday. A controversial effort to ensure that San Jose's libraries are able to offer better hours and more staff is in jeopardy after the city clerk told backers of the plan the wrong number of signatures needed to get the initiative on the November ballot. City Clerk Dennis Hawkins this week informed the group Save San Jose Libraries that the number of signatures would have to be tripled. With only a week left to turn in the names, leaders of the library group say they can't possibly get the additional voter signatures in time.
