- S.F. Muni cameras to look for abnormal behavior (SF Chronicle)
A network of high-tech surveillance cameras programmed to detect unusual behavior and alert authorities will be installed in the Muni Metro subway system. The $3.6 million project, to be installed over five years starting next summer, will be found inside the stations and at the portals of the subway tunnels.
- Mirkarimi wants city to pay his lawyers (SF Chronicle)
Suspended San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, who has been charged with official misconduct by Mayor Ed Lee, has asked the city to fund his private legal defense team as he battles to save his job. The request, made in a letter to City Attorney Dennis Herrera, was rejected Thursday.
- DA won't file charges against seven of nine arrested at Occupy the Farm (Oakland Tribune)
The Alameda County District Attorney declined to file charges against seven of nine Occupy the Farm protesters arrested at UC Berkeley's Gill Tract in Albany "in the interest of justice," a spokeswoman for the Alameda County District Attorney said Thursday. University officials said seven people were arrested May 14 outside the fence of the Gill Tract for unlawful assembly and two were arrested inside for trespassing.
- San Mateo County's Measure T tax measure hanging on in win column (Palo Alto Daily News)
A ballot measure that would tax car rental companies in unincorporated areas to pump $8 million a year into San Mateo County's budget is holding onto a slim lead for approval, according to updated election results released Thursday. Of the 98,863 ballots counted so far, Measure T picked up 311 more yes votes than no votes, or 50.16 percent.
- Settlement in salacious sexual harassment lawsuit against Warriors, Ellis (Oakland Tribune)
A salacious sexual harassment lawsuit filed against the Golden State Warriors and the team's former star player was settled out of court last month. Erika Smith, a former community relations director for the team, agreed to a deal that ended litigation of a case in which she claimed, among other things, that Monta Ellis sent her a picture of his penis in a text message.
- San Jose library ballot measure hits major roadblock (SJ Mercury News)
A controversial effort to ensure that San Jose's libraries are able to offer better hours and more staff is in jeopardy after the city clerk told backers of the plan the wrong number of signatures needed to get the initiative on the November ballot. City Clerk Dennis Hawkins this week informed the group Save San Jose Libraries that the number of signatures would have to be tripled. With only a week left to turn in the names, leaders of the library group say they can't possibly get the additional voter signatures in time.
- Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another scratched from Belmont Stakes (Bay Area News Group)
I'll Have Another's bid for a Triple Crown ended with the shocking news that the colt is out of Saturday's Belmont Stakes because of a swollen left front tendon. Trainer Doug O'Neill delivered the news on the "Dan Patrick Show," telling the radio audience "I'll Have Another is officially out of the Belmont. It's not tragic, but it's a huge disappointment..." I'll Have Another's jockey is Mario Gutierrez, who rode at Golden Gate Fields from 2009-10.
