Last month the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, in partnership with the Bay Area Science Festival, held a panel about our coming robot overlords, euphemistically called “The Challenge and Promise of Artificial Intelligence.”

Two leading researchers in the field, Eric Horvitz of Microsoft Research and Peter Norvig of Google, talked about the future of AI and how prevalent it is already in everyday technology.

In this clip, Norvig gives a status report on Google’s famous driverless car project. “They’re about at the level of human drivers,” he says, “which is not that high a barrier.”

Also, after that bit, the question is posed as to what work of sci-fi will end up most closely depicting future reality in respect to artificial intelligence. Norvig names Rainbows End, by Vernor Vinge.
