On Wall Street, Apple stock rose almost one percent Thursday, gaining $4.72, or 1.25 percent, to reach $382.97 just after 8:30 a.m. PDT, two hours into the trading day.

Mayor Ed Lee moved to avoid a showdown with the Board of Supervisors and other candidates in the mayor's race by convening a task force Wednesday to address closing a loophole in the city's landmark health care law.

Voters may get to choose next November if they want to set term limits on City Council members.
