Summer of Action to Save State Parks
August… the end of the summer. And the end of the California State Parks Foundation’s “Summer of Action.” The parks non-profit kicked off this online program in May after the state announced it would have to close 70 parks next year for lack of funds. The foundation is collecting memories and photos of the parks, and hopefully enough momentum to halt at least some of the closures. So if you’re unable to squeeze in another trip this summer, you can always make a virtual visit to the parks.
Another beautiful site to browse photos and learn about the parks that could be closed is here.
And finally, KALW just sent one of their reporters to one of the state parks on the list — Moss Landing near Monterey — to find out exactly what it takes to close a park. The answer was no one really knows yet. They’ve never had to make such drastic cuts.
