We just caught wind via the San Jose Mercury News that James Durbin, the American Idol contestant who was voted out of the competition this week, will indeed perform to a hometown crowd in Santa Cruz this Saturday evening as originally planned. It’s all part of what’s being called: Durbin Day.

A day after he was eliminated from competition on “American Idol” and his official “Idol” homecoming to Santa Cruz was cancelled, Durbin will come to town after all, as originally planned.

The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk announced an agreement today with “American Idol” that will allow “Durbin Day,” scheduled for Saturday, to proceed even though the 22-year-old Durbin is no longer in the competition.

The event was originally cancelled because “Idol” said Durbin would not be available to travel to Santa Cruz because of commitments to the show. But on Friday, “Idol” agreed for the first time in its history to allow an exception and to sponsor an eliminated competitor for a homecoming concert.

Traditionally, the show only sponsors hometown trips for the top three. Durbin finished fourth in the competition.

Though some details may change, the event will still include a visit to the Louden Nelson Center, a processional to the beach and a concert on the stage at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

“American Idol” has confirmed that it will allow Durbin to come to Santa Cruz. The homecoming event will not, however, be broadcast on “Idol.”

The new schedule includes a kids’ rally from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. followed by a walking processional to the Beach Boardwalk. At 5 p.m., Durbin will sing three songs with the White Album Ensemble at the Boardwalk’s bandstand. More

And don’t pretend you don’t care. Based on the amount of comments we received on previous Durbin posts, we’d beg to differ.

Well, thank the good Lord because I have been mad enough to bite nails ever since he was voted off, one of the most talented young men I have come to know in all my 62 years!!! love him, and thank you Santa Cruz, and thanks to AI for at least having the balls to sponser him since apparently your voting is really messed up and crooked!! Love you james Durbin!!

  • Ali_G

Well said Maxi. Pretty interesting that AI did make an exception here, yet I’m grateful that they did. I DO care and I can’t wait to welcome you home James Durbin!!

  • Stephanie

Wish it were in my neck of the woods. This is only the beginning for James. This boy can sing and I am glad Idol is making this exception. Sad to see him go. He has overcome obstacles that many of us will never have to deal with. He has talent and will have a career in music, and never worry about diapers again. Best to you James. .

Way to go ! Santa Cruz , Thank God he is getting his homecoming . I hope it is huge . Something really bad went on with the voting. I DON’T BELIEVE DURBIN GOT THE LOWEST NUMBER OF VOTES. James Durbin will be a super star ! He will be the talk on tour. American Idol doesn’t deserve him. Please make sure someone does an awesome job videoing his homecoming and putting it on youtube.

  • Cutthroat

Yup that’s right Santa Cruz represent. I go to the same high school as durbin did.

    • Bev

Thank You !!! Make sure we all get to see this great homecoming, I’m mad american idol won’t televise this. It’s going to come back in their face.

  • Eunice

I am so happy that he is getting his homecoming – he so deserves it. It takes away a little from how depressed I have been since he was voted out. I wish all the best for you James Durbin – enjoy your day – and you are my American Idol.

American Idol made this exception cuz they knew they did him wrong. They can’t say that he can’t perform on a non-Idol related gig when they let Pia Toscano perform at Dancing with the Stars and that sure was not Idol nor Fox related gig. They knew they’d be in sooo much trouble if they give James a hard time on this. Still not over his surprising elimination…something is NOT right..how can someone for eleven straight wks never been placed in bottom two or three all of a sudden got cut? Someone did something wrong in AI is all I’m saying

Puleeez people! Just because he’s from YOUR city doesnt make him the best, he was just like Lambert, and the screaming would get to you after awhile. It’s one thing to be prideful since he’s from your city, but mad and blaming AI?? They put him on the map, you all never even knew him before(and he’s from your city!) and America votes….helllllooooo! That’s what the show has always been about, nothing was rigged, so get over your local boy losing and
    accept it!

Hmmmm….I honestly don’t think that it’s only the people from Santa Cruz who were/are upset that James didn’t make it into the top 3. As a matter of fact…I live in Kentucky….have never been to Santa Cruz….and I, along with pretty much everyone I know feels that something was wrong with the voting and he should have never gone home. As for him being the best….well, I think they were all good in their own ways…but, to me James just seemed to have a stage presence about him that reminded me a lot of Chris Daughtry. And like Chris, who was also voted off the same week….James is gonna go far and AI actually would have only limited him to their kind of music. So, that being said…being voted off was probably a blessing…:-)

  • Saint3

    He is AMAZING.

Where are some of the AL winners now?
I seem to hear alot more from Daughtry then some of them,I was upset when he was voted off and now James…He’s going places and I’m gonna be in that long line to buy a ticket for a concert.
