SF Supervisor John Avalos Running for Mayor

It may be easier to list all the people not running for mayor of San Francisco than everyone who is. Let's see...current Mayor Ed Lee, Carrot Top...uh...help me out here...

The latest hat-in-the-ring belongs to Supervisor John Avalos. Fog City Journal has a report and the confirmation-text text:

"True. 4 pm today, my wife and I will go to the DoE (Department of Elections) to pull papers,” Avalos, a progressive, wrote via text this morning.'"

The entry of Avalos, a member of the progressive bloc of supes, may if nothing else short-circuit a run by Chris Daly, who said in February he might feel compelled to enter the race if fellow progs like Ross Mirkarimi, David Campos, Aaron Peskin, or Avalos stayed out.

Here's a list of official candidates so far. I leave anyone out?

    Ranked Choice Voting is preparing to deliver to San Francisco a Mayor that a majority of voters did not select, and did not want. There are now 32 candidates who have pulled papers to run for Mayor!

    San Francisco’s Mayor will be elected with a plurality of support, rather than a majority, just like Malia Cohen who won with 4,321 votes from 18,308 voters or 24% support!

    A Majority Matters. Bring back the majority support requirement.

    Technically, Ranked Choice Voting system improves the likelihood that the winner has the support of a majority of voters and not just a plurality of the voters.

    The front runner in the first round of the election which Malia ultimately won only had 2072 votes.

    Perhaps more important, RCV increases voter turnout which is a greater factor in ensuring better winning candidate representation than the choice of voting system.

    Having 32 candidates is awesome!
