Blog Beat: California Before People, Adoptable Animal of the Week

If past is prologue, Nancy Pelosi just might be back as Speaker of the House of Representatives before you learn to spell B-O-E-H-N-E-R.

There have been three elections since World War II in which House Republicans toppled their Democratic counterparts on Capitol Hill — although this is the first time the House has gone Republican without the Senate following suit.

In two of those elections, 1946 and 1952, Democrats re-took the House two years later. In the third, 1994, that Democratic exile lasted 12 years, until 2006.
What did California look like before people? That's answered in "A State of Change," a picture book by Laura Cunningham, as reported on Berkeleyside. And before you go all gleefully misanthropic, Californians, just remember: No people, no Buster Posey.
