At the Giants’ ceremony a few minutes ago, Gavin Newsom just said something like, “The city’s going to need a new mayor soon, and I only have one thing to say: Fear the beard.”

KQED’s Scott Shafer has interpreted the comment as a shot at Aaron Peskin, the former President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and a frequent Newsom antagonist. (And vice-versa). Peskin has been mentioned as a possible contender to succeed Newsom should he win the Lieutenant Governorship, though one recent profile asserts his influence has waned.

Really? You think he means Aaron Peskin and not the SF Giants Pitcher Brian Wilson? Hmmm… Okay.

yikes, like the mayor’s office responded: really? this is bad reporting being amplified by contextless blogging. did you catch the game?

I completely think that was the reference, particularly if you look at the exact quote. That’s what I thought when I heard it, but I figured virtually no one in the crowd would catch the subtlety.
