Must-Clicking: Local Salary Database

If you haven't seen this yet, it's really worth a look. In the wake of the Bell scandal, the State Controller's Office has put up a database of local-government salaries, which makes for some fascinating reading. Browse the cities, listed in alphabetical order, and hit "View Data" to select one. Then, to work yourself into what will no doubt be a frothing fit, click on the "Annual Maximum Salary" to rearrange the jobs to display in order of remuneration.

In San Francisco, Numero Uno on the list is the head of MUNI, who makes $315,140. I would say "no comment," but that would sound like a comment...

    Are the "Noncompliant Cities and Counties" in violation of state law, or just taking their time to make sure they do it right? I was chagrined to discover that, for example, Berkeley's on the list. Given their staunchly big-government philosophy, it seems a tad hypocritical for them to leave their employees off such an important and potentially incendiary document.

    Are cities compelled to provide the information? If they don't, are there sanctions? The site speaks of "reporting requirements" but the page detailing noncompliance is more circumspect, with its reference to cities that "have yet to file."

      Good question. From the LA Times report:

      "(Controller John Chiang) acknowledged that some local government agencies have been slow to respond. The website lists 66 cities and counties that had not yet met the requirement for submitting payroll information.
