Good Read: How Teachers Are Trying to Master New Standards

Many teachers still don’t feel prepared to teach new Common Core state standards, but they know they need to get up to speed quickly. State tests will be aligned to the new standards starting next year and many students are expected to fair poorly. One problem for teachers: the standards don’t tell teachers what to teach, instead they lay out what students should be able to do after each grade. That could require a shift in teaching methods and leaves some teachers wondering if this is just another short-lived reform.


School systems nationwide are scrambling to prepare teachers to implement new education standards known as the Common Core. In some cases, the standards, which lay out what students will be expected to know by the end of each grade, will require teachers to adopt new teaching methods.
