YouTube Voice Heard Around the World
“This was supposed to be the generation that never thought of anything but our Facebook profiles and TV screens. I think that claim is now quite ridiculous. Now we’ve shown solidarity and comradeship and all those things that were associated with students are as relevant as they’ve ever been.”
Rodney Owen McCarthy, a 15-year-old British protester, speaks to a crowd about student protests he witnessed in the U.K. in a video that’s been viewed more than 375,000 times at last count.
One sign of YouTube’s success as a tool for activists is McCarthy’s final message, one that hasn’t been reported in the media. Although the battle over tuition isn’t over, the student activists have achieved one of their goals, he says: coming of age as a generation of socially aware citizens.
