Yash Snider is correct when he says that pro wrestling has always been "worked" -- a point made in my book. However, the total breakdown of the carny code of "kay fabe," with the producers of this form of entertainment openly acknowledging that it's not a legitimate competition, happened only in recent years. Thanks for watching and commenting! Irv Muchnick

Josh, I just got a new TV last week and for the first time I was able to see your show in glorious high definition. It was amazing -- your shirts look brighter, I can read the titles of the books on your shelves, and even the cookies appear crystal-clear (yum!). What an incredible picture! Thanks to the folks at KQED for making the JKS available in high-def.
So I was a little distracted by the frills, but it was still a very interesting interview -- I'm not a wrestling fan but Irvin Muchnick is a fascinating guy and the Wandering Josh segment was hilarious.

Re Irv Muchnik and pro wrestling: In the 1940s the Chicago Daily News would print the results of wrestling matches on the sport pages. However, a disclaimer appeared at the top of each article, in italics, which read something like this: Due to crowding in the drama pages, this article is graciously given space in the sports pages. However, it is drama news just the same.

So, the sport was regarded as entertainment even in those days.

Josh,

The segment with you in the ring with the wrestler was brilliant. I was laughing out loud! If this doesn't win an Emmy there is no justice.
