Profile: Claudia Chaufan is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Health Policy at the Institute for Health & Aging in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California San Francisco. She received her medical degree at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina, where she practiced medicine (clinical diabetes) for ten years. In the United States she earned a doctorate in sociology and has since been teaching sociology of health and medicine, sociology of power, public health, comparative health care systems, and sociological theory. Her research interests include the sociopolitical determinants of the diabetes epidemic, the sociology of human genetic research, the sociology of disease-based social movements, comparative health care systems, and health and human rights. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Health & Aging / Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California in San Francisco. She is also vice-president of California Physicians Alliance, the California chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program, a professional organization that advocates for a social insurance, single payer system in the United States.
