First Annual California STEM Symposium Resources

We are gearing up for the California STEM Symposium taking place next week! We will be at the Share Fair, Exhibit Hall (Booth 414) and presenting several sessions.  In advance of the symposium check out a sampling of resources and get your STEM on!

Curriculum Enhancement, Digital Learning Objects and PBS LearningMedia
Monday, November 18th: 11:00am-12:20pm

In this presentation, participants will explore PBS LearningMedia, a media resource library of free purpose built digital learning objects from public media organizations across the country. A demonstration will be provided and an example lesson given.

Connecting STEM Content to Real Life Using Multimedia
Monday, November 18th:  2:50 – 3:50 pm
Room 308

Use free multimedia resources from KQED to engage diverse learners, promote STEM careers, and connect science and engineering concepts to the real world. Participants will learn strategies to easily and effectively integrate video, audio, interactives, and more into classroom curriculum to ignite students’ curiosity. Sample Resources

Shaking Things Up with E-books and iTunes U Courses
Tuesday, November 19th:  9:40 – 10:40 am
Exhibit Hall C

Explore free, multimedia rich e-books and iTunes U courses on earthquakes, river deltas, biotechnology, and energy. Engage students with interactive content. Participants will discover ways to use these resources with students and get a hands-on opportunity to navigate through the course and book. Note: These resources are currently available for iPads and other iOS devices.

This Symposium will bring together 2000 teachers, administrators, students, higher education representatives, program providers, philanthropic representatives and industry representatives to engage them in STEM education by providing strategies and resources for program implementation. The Symposium will have a special focus on increasing and supporting the participation of women and girls—as well as other underrepresented groups—in STEM fields. It will also highlight leaders in classroom innovation from across the state and attract student teams to showcase critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.
