Is creating a Zeega a new form of art? Is it in the same category as film making, digital art, or animation? Or is it something else? Try out making a Zeega and see how the process relates to the artistic process.

Introduction

Technology and media introduce new ways to share art and new additions to the artist’s toolbox. Zeega is an online platform for creating and remixing media to create stories, montages and digital collages that express emotion. Zeegas are interactive videos made with combinations and layers of animated GIFs, images, and audio tracks. Zeegas can convey emotion or sentiment, illustrate text, and tell stories. They are mash-ups of original content and existing moments or images from the Internet and pop culture.

Art Critic Nicholas Bourriard coined the term “relational aesthetics” and compared DJs to contemporary artists because they remix existing material to create something new. Zeegas could be looked at in the same way: as remixes presented in a new context that changes the original meaning of the elements used to create them. Contemporary artists are not limited by physical materials; they can create meaningful messages digitally, and there are many technology-enhanced creative platforms.

We encourage students to reply to other people’s tweets to foster more of a conversation. Also, if students tweet their personal opinions, ask them to support their ideas with links to interesting/credible articles online (adding a nice research component) or retweet other people’s ideas that they agree/disagree/find amusing. We also value student-produced media linked to their tweets like animated GIFs or more extensive blog posts to represent their ideas. Of course, do as you can… and any contribution is most welcomed.

  • Camdon Hisey

Yes, I think anything that makes you look at a common (or any really) situation in a different way should be classified as an art form.

  • Isaac Scarborough

I believe that it is a new form of art and I, myself would label this as a type of animation. In a way it reminds me of a gif, but a bit smoother. I believe that if you are able to make something convey emotion or sentiment, illustrate text, or a tell story in some way, it is indeed art.

    • Cesar Aguilar

After reading your comment, you made me look at the zeega image with a very different perspective. Nice I agree with you.

  • Samantha Wojcik

I think that zeega is a new form of art. I think it has its own form of art so it wouldn’t fall into the film, digital art, or animation. It has some features of each of those category’s but I don’t think it should fall under just one category.

  • Lane

Zeega seems like an awesome new thing that artists can use to get their art work out to the world and how everyday people can feel as if they are an artist.

  • Ben

I think zeega is a new form of art. Now that we have programs that can make things like this it takes an artist to make something like this.

  • Owen Manns

No, it’s not a new form of art, but it’s kind of like a form of animation which has been around for awhile now.

  • Wesley Seidelmann

I would believe that it’s a from of art. It definitely takes a good amount of knowledge to assimilate something such as this in an art program and to be able to convey some kind of message through this “art”.

    • Ben

I agree, it takes an artist if you want to make something like a zeega

    • Arthur Clemons

I agree, only artistic people can see these traits.

  • Clay

I do not think that Zeegas are a new form of art. There is nothing artistic about repeating an image/action over and over. There isn’t any emotion or true effort put into the “art”.

    • Camdon Hisey

I don’t agree. I think that a lot of emotion could be in these arts. It would just depend on your connection to the artist and if you’re thinking the way he or she felt.

    • john

I disagree with what you are saying clay. Zeegas take a lot of thought and creativity and thought. So for you to say that this is not art. I simple must just disagree.

    • Dakota Brooke

You can put emotion in anything, so for something that you can make and see like a zeega can definitely be a way to express emotion.

  • Kyle Williams

It could be taken as artsy, but if anything, I think it is more for amusement and pleasure. Not entirely art, so I would say no.

    • Cole Reinhold

I understand where your coming from but really all it is is a moving picture, and pictures are being considered art more and more recently. Not to mention movies which are a form of art.

  • Guest

Zeega seems like an interesting concept, but I’m not sure where it should fall. Its not long enough to be called a movie or video, but its not a still image. So I guess the best thing for it is for it to have its

    • Lane

So what you are saying gifs are not a form of art/self expression?

  • Quentin

I think it is a new form of art. To get something to transition like this and repeat over and over again. I think takes some real skill. It is way different from moves and animations in my opinion.

    • Wesley Seidelmann

I agree with this statement. It definitely takes a lot of time and knowledge to be able to achieve something like this.

  • Cole Reinhold

Zeega seems like an interesting concept, but I’m not sure where it should fall. Its not long enough to be called a movie or video, but its not a still image. So I guess the best thing for it is for it to have its own little section in art.

    • Kyle Williams

Yeah zeega is pretty interesting, and it is most of the time more entertaining than regular works of art.

      • Clay

And that’s pretty much why I don’t think zeega can be art. Yeah, it’s interesting, but it doesn’t fall into any other forms of art. And to create a whole new concept to art is a little excessive for something this simple.

  • john

I think zeega is a cool new form of art that will become really big eventually. This new form of art is difficult but awesome at the same time.

    • Samantha Wojcik

I totally agree. It will be some time but soon it will be something great.

  • Cesar Aguilar

I think is zeega is not new form of art, I think art requires sometime to make not just a few minutes.

    • Isaac Scarborough

Though I agree it’s not the hardiest thing in the world to create, I do think that this art, just because something isn’t extremely difficult to create or the next Mona Lisa, doesn’t take way from the fact that it’s still art. The definition of art is the expression of human creative skill and imagination through things like painting, drawing etc. As long as it accomplishes this, i think it is art.

  • ⚾Brandon Milligan⚾

I don’t think it is a new form of art. It would take time to truly create a new form of art.

    • Owen Manns

      this is very true

  • Dakota Brooke

I think zeega is a cool, new art form as long as the artists who create zeegas, keep the integrity of the art form.

  • Arthur Clemons

I believe that it can be a form of art. There are many different types of art that people wouldn’t call art. Such as graffiti, and other forms of vandalism, but they can still be classified as art. I believe if someone puts the time and effort in to create something new, and imaginative it is art. I see this as more of an animation classification.

  • Daniel

Zeega cannot be defined as art, some things can be seen as very beautiful but other things are just created to be funny.
