Do Now

Do you make it a regular practice to care for the environment? If so, what do you do? If not, why?

Introduction

The first Earth Day celebration was held on April 20, 1970. Its founder, Senator Gaylord Nelson, developed the idea over a seven-year period after he realized that political leaders were not making environmental issues a priority. Senator Nelson began a massive grassroots effort among his colleagues and in local communities. Twenty million people participated in the first Earth Day. They became part of a change that continues today.

In the Bay Area, Earth Day served to enhance the environmental activism already present at that time. Many people had begun grassroots efforts that were making significant impacts in their own communities. Air, water, garbage and open space were just some of the challenging environmental issues that were not being addressed. In the 1960s, there were no recycling programs or Clean Air Act, sewage was freely dumped into waterways, toxic emissions went unregulated, little open space was being preserved and the Bay’s wetlands were disappearing rapidly.

Things are very different today, thanks to the work begun 42 years ago by a few key people. Now, there are many Bay Area citizens who are interested in and passionate about taking care of the environment. And students are growing up to be the next generation of environmental stewards. Whether conducting energy audits at their schools, planting native species to restore habitats, or participating in beach and waterway clean-ups, youth are making a difference in their communities.

How do you make a difference?

We encourage students to reply to other people’s tweets to foster more of a conversation. Also, if students tweet their personal opinions, ask them to support their ideas with links to interesting/credible articles online (adding a nice research component) or retweet other people’s ideas that they agree/disagree/find amusing. We also value student-produced media linked to their tweets like memes or more extensive blog posts to represent their ideas. Of course, do as you can…and any contribution is most welcomed.

I try to do my best, but it’s hard to take the time to care when you can’t immediately see the results of your efforts. I care, and this Do Now is a good reminder that we need to take of our planet.

I honestly don’t take the time to recycle. I will occasionally reuse water bottles but that’s about it. We should become more aware of the environment through because one day we will regret producing so much trash. #KWEDdonow @rapoch

Everyday my parents and I recycle to help the environment. My school also has a SEED club that encourages helping the environment, and recycling on a daily basis. The community has encouraged recycling by providing people with recycling bins.

    • Jason

We need to do more than just encourage recycling. We have been encouraging recycling for decades, yet America is still number one in waste per person. In 2011, we averaged a whopping 760 kgs per person per year of trash (http://www.recyclingstatistics.org/). Clearly the message is not getting across to everyone. Recycling is not without problems, as the process actually emits more toxins into the atmosphere. Some of these toxins cause nerve damage and respiratory damage if inhaled (http://www.livestrong.com/article/174437-health-effects-of-waste-recycling/).

The environmental movement should be so much more than just telling people to throw paper and plastic in a recycling bin. Atmospheric and Oceanic Carbon Dioxide levels are increasing drastically each year, as are levels of sulphur oxides emitted by cars and factories. These cause acid rain, which is harmful to both the ground environment and human infrastructure. Cadmium is released from factories dealing with “batteries, welding, brazing, and soldiering” as well as from power plants burning fossil fuels (http://www.planetagenda.com/chemicals.htm).

In conclusion, there are a lot of aspects to the environmental issue. Earth Day seems to focus on recycling, which is just one small part of the problem.

As for caring about the earth I just don’t care. I’m sure that there us plenty of people out there that care and will do the job. I don’t even pay attention. The world is going to hell anyway. Thing is nobody knows when and we may never know until it happens.

      Darin,
I am no environmentalist by any means, but c’mon man. Have some respect. Not that it will sway your opinion, but some interesting statistics can be found at http://des.nh.gov/organization/divisions/water/wmb/coastal/trash/documents/marine_debris.pdf. For example, the amount of time it takes for some objects to decompose are as follows: Cigarette Butt- 1-5 years, Plastic Bag- 10-20 years, Plastic Cups- 50 years. If the world was just as inconsiderate as yourself we would be swimming in trash and I can assure you life would be much less of a luxury. How hard is it really to at least save some trash to throw it away when you get home or near a trashcan? If little kids can do it I feel as if an adult should be able to do the same.
I do not wish to label you with doing any of these things, but I assume its somewhat along these lines. Maybe you do not understand just how easy it is to be supportive of this cause. You can do things as easy as only washing full loads in your washing machine, or taking shorter showers to conserve water. Maybe feeling as if you are part of a community effort will change your view on this topic, instead of continuously shrouding us with your cloak of negativity. To touch up on this visit http://www.annmariebrown.com/helpearth.html. It has a few things you could look into, and hopefully it will change your mind.
Earth day isn’t necessarily people asking you to be some crazy hippie-esque dude, but just for you to be aware of your actions and how it effects the rest of the world. Who knows what kind of turmoil we would live in if everyone had such a pessimistic attitude. Maybe it would be good for you to touch up on some of your knowledge here: http://www.earthday.org/. I think it would do you well.

My Family and I always find some way of recycling to reduce that amount of garbage that go’s to the land fill. Finding different ways to help the planet is kinda cool. Helping the planet gives you a good feeling about your self just by thronging the plastic bottles into the recycling bin. If every one joined and takes part in making recycling and every day ting the earth would be a little bit cleaner and greener.

As a young adult, one way I make a difference is by recycling. When I was younger, I participated in an earth Day activity. I planted and cared for some flowers, a small but necessary component of the environment.

I do not really make a habit of cleaning the environment, but I do sometimes. On the occasion that I actually do clean the environment, I do the following. My father and I collect bottles and we recycle them. I also always pick up the trash and never leave anything on the trash. If I see trash on the ground, I pick it up. I believe I make a difference becuase I clean trash and do not leave things lying in the ground. Sometimes, I go to the beach and clean the beach as community service. All in all, I do not do it as a habit. But I do it and I make a difference. Save the Earth! Clean up after yourself. ( At least.)

I do not do much for the environment other than keep it as clean as possible. This is beacause i believe that even if everyone did so, it would hardly make a difference. We do too much damage to the environment for even a great amount of effort to change our situation.

Being residents of the Salt Lake Valley its especially important for citizens to limit pollutants, especially with the inversion being so bad in the winter. People should try to limit driving and take steps like carpooling and using public transportation. Utah has one of the best systems of public transportation in the United States that offers a wide variety of trains, busses, and light rails. They have trains that run 88 miles, connecting the cities of Provo and Ogden. The light rail system was recent expanded to include transportation to and from Salt Lake International Airport. Employers have arranged for UTA buses to pick workers up from the central hub for a far reduced fare, in an effort to promote using public transportation to commute to work. With these expanses of transit at citizens disposal, using public transportation or cutting down travel should be imperative. I think many cities across the United States could adopt similar improvements in their public transport in an effort to increase ridership and cut down car pollution. Besides cutting car emissions, cities would be able to eliminate traffic problems and is a more efficient use of public funds if the transports are actually ridden. This is just one way the everyday citizens can help Mother Earth.

Hmmm, the first Earth Day celebration was on April 20th… coincidence? I think not. But, in all seriousness, Earth Day and environmental activism have a rich background with a lot of awesome characters. Take Stewart Brand, a guy in the middle of the San Francisco environmental scene who published the Whole Earth Catalog – a collection of tools and tips for a creative and self-sustainable lifestyle. Also artists like Gary Snyder, a poet who was the muse for Jack Kerouac’s book, the Dharma Bums, and who explored many themes of the environment and nature. Earth Day just carries on their love of the earth and helps to keep it an inhabitable place for years to come. If you feel like it, be sure to check out the online versions of the Whole Earth Catalog at http://www.wholeearth.com/index.php

Recycling is a VITAL part of our current world. Humans are accumulating billions of piles of trash a year, and if we don’t do something about it now, it will become a tragic problem in the future. Everyone hears about recylcling paper and plastic, but what about glass? In 2009, The United States generated 12 million tons of glass, but only recycled 3 million. This means that 9 MILLION tons of glass ended up sitting in a landfill! “That amount could fill enough tractor trailers to stretch from New York to Los Angeles and back!” (www.kab.org) Recycling glass makes everything so much easier! It uses less energy, and less resources, and is an easier process than having to generate new glass! “Over a ton of natural resources are conserved for every ton of glass recycled, including 1,300 pounds of sand, 410 pounds of soda ash, 380 pounds of limestone, and 160 pounds of feldspar.” (www.kab.org) “There is an increased demand for recycled glass referred to as “cullet” in the glass industry. This is because cullet or recycled glass costs much less than raw material used to manufacture glass from scratch. Cullet also consumes very little electricity, thereby conserving energy, which translates to decrease in carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which are greenhouse gases that contribute to the carbon footprint.” (www.all-recycling-facts.com) “Glass container manufacturers use up to 70% recycled glass, or ‘cullet.’ ”
Glass is such a wide used commodity- bottles, windows, jars etc. Make sure to check out your city’s recycling program (In Utah, it is a separate program) Recycle them in separate bins, and encourage your friends, families and neighbors to also!

Earth day is great and all helping us notice all of these problems with the Earth and help us celebrate it. But that should be an everyday thing. You should think about what you can do to help the planet everyday and recycle every single time, not just on Earth day. Welcome to mother Earth where we live and we need to save it. If you don’t then the planet will eventually die off which is the truth. Think about that the next time you don’t recycle or litter. Everything just builds up so save it before it builds up to be too much

We live in a time where convenience dictates the way we navigate many aspects of our daily lives. Although it may be more convenient to buy a bottle of water or drive instead of using public transit, I believe we need to be more aware of the long-term effects of our actions. Our world is deteriorating at an alarming rate. Each year 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, storm water, and industrial waste are dumped into U.S. water. This results in approximately 46% of lakes being too polluted for fishing, aquatic life, or swimming. (http://www.dosomething.org/tipsandtools/11-facts-about-pollution)
While the U.S. has come a long way in recycling, I think it is important to remember how we can make small differences in other ways. Air pollution is a big problem in my home state of Utah and much of this is caused by too much driving. Many times driving is unavoidable but if possible, make an effort to use public transportation or walk. This cuts down on the amount of pollutants being emitted into the air. In the U.S., exhaust from cars make up about 60& of all carbon monoxide emissions in the country. An easy way to not contribute to this statistic is to not let your car idle. After 10 seconds of idling, you are using more gas than if you turned the engine off and restarted the car. (http://www.worldwatch.org/system/files/Care2%20041612.pdf)
It is important that my generation make a conscious effort to change the way we use the earth’s resources. We may have to alter our current lifestyle, but it will help preserve the beauty of our world for future generations to come.

To tell the truth I do not play an ample character in taking care of the environment. I don’t not help, but I dont help excessively. Here and there I’ll pick up trash from the floor. I do recycle and I dont litter, but I dont take quite an extensive role in it. I feel yes, it would be much better if every one helped (even if it was just a small amount). It is still helping.

I do not really make it a habit of cleaning the environment, but I do sometimes. On the occasion that I actually do clean the environment, I do the following. I always pick up the trash and never leave anything on the floor. If I see trash on the ground, I pick it up. I believe I make a difference becuase I clean trash and do not leave things lying on the ground. Sometimes, I go to the beach and clean it as community service. In all, I do not do it as a habit. But I do make a difference.

Although my actions are very simple, I do believe that my actions make a difference. I, like many, recycle bottles and clean up not only after myself but also after others. Although these actions are small, in the long run they make a big difference. One thing that I can begin to do, however, is clean up our oceans, for I enjoy the marine life, and I know that whenever humans litter, the animals are put at risk. Therefore, I will try to help clean the oceans, because who knows, I could be a dolphin’s hero.

Although I don’t make it a regular practice to care for the environment, I still do my part in recycling and picking up garbage. One way in which I help the environment is by recycling bottles, cans, and plastics into a recycling center. This benefits both the environment. I also volunteer at parks and schools, whenever I have time, and pick up trash that other people were too lazy to throw away. Besides picking up trash, I also help conserve the waste of electricity usage at my house by turning off unnecessary lights, game systems, and other various electronics. It does not take much to help the environment even if it is small work like turning off lights or even picking up small wrappers from the floor. Anyone can help clean, even you. #Mooresclassdonow

When I do clean the environment, I would help my father recycle all the plastic bottles and cans that we have or I would go out and play a sport with my sister or brother. Although it is repeatedly enunciated an Disney channel, I do not make it a regular practice to care for the environment, but it is not to late to start. However, I do clean up after myself and take simple precautions. Even though it doesn’t affect planet Earth abruptly, because I am such a minuscule part of the Earth as a whole, it does add up! I recycle regularly for the money, but often disregard the whole idea behind recycling. It also agitates me that people litter, so I often pickup trash that I find on the floor. To my chagrin, helping the enviornment usually is not my top prority. Like many high school students, I have a busy schedule filled to bursting with homework, study, and extracurricular activities. However, I do believe any small action we can take to help is beneficial, and like many others, for my family, that small action is recycling. Paper, bottles, cans, plastic–my family recycles it all. I believe stongly that in the long run, these actions–though they appear may insignificant–have the power to change our planet for the better.

Sometimes I see trash on the ground next to a trashcan and throw it away. My family and I also recycle all the bottles and cans we have. Maybe in the future i will look in to cleaning up beaches and parks. Many people don’t understand what a little bit of recycling can do to make a change. Landfills are running out of space and later on there will be no space, so we need to start recycling now!

My family and I make taking care of the environment a regualr practice. We recycle bottles and cans. Also, we conserve energy by having lights on only when necessary and have energy efficient appliances around the house. However, I do think i can make an even better effort in order to help the environment.#Mooresclassdonow

You would be surprised on what little changes can make a big difference! My family and I recycle cans and plastic bottles everyday. Also, in the morning when I brush my teeth I do not have the water running to conserve water. What not only myself can do, but others, is pick-up trash from the floor and recycle as much as possible. Little things like this can go a long way and will help make a push, in the attempt on saving the planet this will be worth it in the end so start now! #Moore’sClassDoNow

I do not make it a regular practice to care for the environment but when I see trash on the floor it bugs me to see that other people do not care for our earth. I sometimes do pick up trash but its not a habit of mine to do that. I make an environmental difference by finding ways to recycle things like bottles and paper. At the end of the day and realizing how much you’ve helped earth be a better place you tend to have a good feeling in you. So from now and on I pledge myself to help our environment more often. #Mooresclassdonow

Unfortunately, I would not be an inspiring role model when it comes to caring for the environment. It is not that I do not care, it is just that I simply forget to carry out my obligations to the environment. If I happen to remember that I need to recycle or that I need to dispose of my garbage properly, then I will, but most of the time I just forget. My family does recycle cans and plastic so we do make a contribution, if small, to help make the world a cleaner place. While that does not seem like much it all adds up in the long run.

I’m not one of those persons who goes to the beach clean ups or goes to the park to clean up trash not people leave behind, but I do try to recycle at home. I feel like I should take care about the planet and the environment around me by being more cautious with the usage of the electricity in my house. If one person does something eco-friendly it could do a lot for the Earth.

I do make it a regular practice to take care of my environment. When I brush my teeth I turn the fossit off after I rinse my tooth brush, my family recycles bottles and cans, we have a place in the kitchen for grocery bags that we reuse from the store, and I car pool with my neighbor to school. If everyone left it to other people to take care of our environment then no one will.

@KQEDEDSPACE Everyday I do something to help with my environment usually they are really small things like just turning off the lights when I am not in the room; and sometimes I work harder to help the environment like I will pick up trash on the street or do some gardening. I’m not really sure, but I know that the Earth needs to be taken care of, and I know that I can definitely do something to help it. Earth Day is really important and we should value nature while we can. #mscenterhistoryclass #KQEDdonow

On Earth day, I visit various places and volunteer to pick up trash. My family, on a normal basis, recycle bottles. Also, on earth day, i plant different plants. There are several ways one can dedicate their time to help fulfill the dream of making Earth “Go Green.” Picking up trash helps prevents the human race from going extinct. In closing, Earth Day is very beneficial to people, animals, future generations, and our surroundings.

I make it a regular practice to help the environment by doing things on a daily basis, like reducing the amount of electricity by turning off the TV and lights when they are not being used. I also reduce the amount of water I use. I recycle paper, bottles, cans, and other things. I reuse things like water bottles and we use washable dishes. Plus, sometimes I clean nature by picking up trash.
