What are the advantages or disadvantages of taking courses online? Would you prefer that classes be given online or in person? Please explain your thoughts.

Introduction

The virtual classroom is really catching on in the U.S. with more than two million K-12 students taking classes online as an alternative and flexible way of learning.

In California, Governor Jerry Brown strongly supports this move away from the traditional classroom. He sees online college courses as a way to deal with the problem of overcrowded classrooms and hopes that through providing low-cost online classes, education will become more affordable for students. With this in mind, he is fostering partnerships between online learning programs and higher education, such as the partnership between San Jose State University and the startup Udacity. In his budget, he has allocated $17 million for community colleges and $10 million each for the UC and Cal State systems to expand online learning.

But as KQED’s MindShift points out in Where is Technology Leading Higher Education?, these dramatic changes in teaching and learning practices are traumatic for colleges. They are struggling to keep up with the pace of change. “Terms like historic, seismic and revolutionary now pop up in descriptions of the challenges that higher education faces in the coming years.”

Reuter’s post Online schools face backlash as states question results claims that in many states, Maine, New Jersey and North Carolina, there has been a backlash with educators and officials questioning and challenging standards in the new cyber-schools.

But since money is tight and the technology is available to provide easier access to source material, universities are being forced to move away from traditional models of learning, which are not necessarily delivering impressive outcomes. The future is looking very different for education. Online and blended models of learning are well and truly on the horizon.

Do you welcome this change? Will it be more convenient to be able to work and study whenever and wherever you want to?

KQED Forum segment Can Online Courses Ease California’s Education Woes? – Jan. 17, 2013
Governor Jerry Brown says online college courses could help solve one of the problems facing the state’s education system: overcrowded classrooms. The governor is fostering partnerships between online learning programs and higher education, including a newly inked deal between San Jose State University and the startup Udacity. Can low-cost online classes help keep education affordable? Can online classes maintain the quality of a university lecture?

We encourage students to tweet their personal opinions as well as support their ideas with links to interesting/credible articles online (adding a nice research component) or retweet other people’s ideas that they agree/disagree/find amusing. We also value student-produced media linked to their tweets like memes or more extensive blog posts to represent their ideas. Of course, do as you can…and any contribution is most welcomed.

KQED MindShift post Experimenting and Innovating: How to Find the Best Tools and Tactics -
Jan. 23, 2013
New York City is experimenting with new tools and tactics with its Innovation Zone, a devoted unit for trying out new approaches to learning and sharing best practices with like-minded educators. The iZone, as it’s commonly called, started in the 2010-11 school year with 81 schools, and since then, they’ve more than doubled that number and hope to reach 400 participating schools by 2014.

KQED MindShift post Online Learning: It’s Complicated – April 19, 2011
Online learning in K-12 classrooms has gotten some bad press recently. The articles portray low-quality computer programs replacing teachers in a short-sighted effort to cut costs.

I think the idea of online school is both helpful and important. It makes it possible for those people who want to go to school but don’t have the time to sit in a classroom to go to school. Being able to do it whenever and wherever you want makes it helpful to be able to earn a degree while still living life. I personally would prefer to sit in a class and go to school that way because that’s just how I learn, but with some other people, it is an advantage to be able to learn online. I think it’s a great and innovative idea.

I personally would much rather take a course in a classroom environment. By taking an online class a person misses out on the opportunity to ask questions and go in during office-hours for help. I also believe that by getting a flexible schedule to do school related work students will push an assignment to the side leading them to eventually and inevitably forget about the assignment. By being in a classroom environment a person learns crucial skills to succeed in life after college. These skills include interacting with others, critical thinking, problem solving and their ability to ask or comprehend questions.

I think that there should be a mix of both online classes and in person classes. Certain classes that are highly popular among students such as Psychology should be given the option to take the class online if the class room is too full. Though some classes like Literature classes are better taught in person so they can fully learn and comprehend the text and ideas of the text easier. Math classes should also be taught in person because it’s also much easier for students to learn with a teacher guiding them.

I think online learning would be more difficult to handle for students and teachers. There is no physical interaction and most students would not have an authority figure watching over them, unless their parents were to stay home full time and help them stay on track. Also, students do not usually have the best time-management skills, so giving them the huge responsibility of watching over their own education does not sound favorable. If students are learning online, then they will most likely be inside most of the day, which is extremely unhealthy. Students need to go outside and interact with other people to learn to fit into society and be comfortable conversing with others. Finally, if there are online programs for students, then that means there are some teachers out of jobs.

I think this is a good way to get an education because it fixes the problem of over populated classes and learning is at your own rate. You aren’t forced to keep up like regular classes you can take your time and learn it. I’m glad Jerry Brown is trying to improve the education system with these classes and hopefully it will all work out.

I feel that online classes are a positive learning experience. You can go at your own pace. It also does make classes less crowded. If a student chooses to move at a faster pace, this is another reason online classes are a great idea. It should not be looked down upon because a student chooses to do his/her classes differently.

I think that having online schooling would be fun, but personally seems to me like it would be too easy to get distracted. It seems like a good idea for people that don’t have the time to actually go somewhere and can’t fit school into their everyday schedule. With online schooling though not everyone is being pushed to do their assignments like in public schools.

i feel online schooling is a good idea because it helps people that are busy get school work done so they can do what they need to do at school at the same time. some people have important things they need to do such as helping there parents or taking care of someone at home and if your sick you can still do your work because its all at home plus kids wont have to worry about being late to class because its at there finger tips. the best part is that you can do every thing on your own time.

online classes can come to an advantage for those who don’t have the resources to get to school or those who have social problems but most of the time they’re not really needed if its cheaper for college then by all means do it but at the same time it should ultimately be the students choice whether or not to use online or traditional classes.

I like the idea that Jerry Brown wants to make a virtual classroom for college courses rather than the traditional classroom. I completely agree that online college courses will be better than the traditional overcrowded classrooms. People can save gas if they take online classes.

This is a very innovative idea to establish. However, the fact with all these “cyber-schools” may flaw. For example, they could experience some technical problems throughout the class session. On the other hand, I wouldn’t mind this idea taking effect anytime soon.

While online classes are more convenient, I think there are some subjects, like art and drama, that cannot be effectively taught online. I believe that taking classes online would make teachers even less approachable for students, when teachers already have so little one on one time. Also, older people trying to return to college or take classes for the first time would have difficulty with computers. I think that some courses would be useful if taught online, but should not be required.

I feel that many students will miss the opportunity to be able to learn in a classroom. You may not be able to ask questions to your teacher or students in person. Also it will make you rely on the computer for every single thing. At a classroom, most things will be supplied to you and it’s up to you to get the work done or be able to work with others in a group.

I think that online education is a great concept, but I feel like it will be poorly executed. I know that when I’m on my computer, I am checking Facebook, my email, and watching youtube videos. It is too easy to get sidetracked while on a computer. Another problem I see with this is that the students lose the ability to ask the teachers questions or have 1 on 1 conversations with teachers. I know for me, if my calculus teacher didn’t guide me through the class, I wouldn’t be doing as well in class as I am now. I also think that it is important for kids and teens to socialize with others and I feel that they are losing the chance to make friends and become socially adept by taking online courses.

I believe that while online education is both convenient and cheaper, it can cause many problems. I, personally, would rather have a teacher talking to me in person rather than reading what they want to say or just hearing it through a podcast. Many problems may arise from switching to online education. These may include some student’s inaccessibility to the internet, cheating, and a lack of dedication that a student may have when sitting in a classroom. As online users, we are so disconnected from what we do on the internet that we may not want to work online. For example, if a student has a SCHEDULED class, they will feel more prone to going to class and doing the work, whereas if they were simply PLANNING on doing their online class, but didn’t have to, they would not feel as responsible for not doing the work. ONline education is cheaper and more convenient, however I feel the problems that may arise are heavier than the benefits.

I believe that online education has its pro and cons. Being able to take your classes and look at notes when you need to can be very convenient. But what if you have a question? Are you able to email your teacher or professor? How easily will the be able to explain the answer over and email?
I honestly think technology is already a way too big part of our lives. I believe that if everyone shifted to online classes the world would just become more oblivious to the real world. I kind of think that it could be a good idea though and make things more efficient. But I also think having human interactions and having social times is very important to human development.

online schooling seems to be t its best in theory although very many kids benefit from it, it seems to risky. Many kids grow apathy for school and education, with online schooling it will be easier to not get an education. not to mention who will actually be able to pay attention with incoming emails, tweets, facebook notifications etc. i feel as though it is a great idea but it may have more failures than success unfortunately.

I think that doing things online is alright, however i don’t feel that people should go to school online because you don’t get the same human interactions with other people and you don’t really get communication skills and things like that like you would in a regular school environment, also people could be doing other things while they’re supposed to be learning, they may get distracted and that is something to take into consideration. So my vote would be a no.

I think that would be a great idea to do more online courses, especially for colleges since not everyone can attend it.

I think online classes is a good idea because theres many students now a days who either dont have the time or patients to be going to school and what better if they can do it online.this is a great idea for people who want to go back to school but dont want to go to actual school instead they can do at home when ever and at their comfort and pace and not be pressured.

I think online classes can be a good idea, depending on the person. But along with educational growth comes experiencing new things. Although, the classes are more independent, smaller, and time efficient, your most likely going to miss out on all the other aspects of school.

It seems like a good idea on paper, but I just can’t see this working very well. Kids will be able to cheat easier by screenshotting their tests or homework and posting it online, or have someone else do their work for them.

The idea of online courses in high school and college sounds like a good idea. The point of taking away over-crowded classrooms is also a benefit of them. Plus, it would push the country further in the twenty-first century. However, the problem with online courses is that they take away the connection between students and teachers. To get help on a specific problem, for example, would be much harder to do. Also, less people would be inclined to speak to people face to face. In all, though, if it can be controlled, or at least have a balance between online courses and class time, it would be a good idea.

I don’t think schooling should completely shift online, but I do think that it can be a blend of online and in-person learning. Online schooling would be cheaper and reduce crowding in classrooms, but students would lose the classroom environment and it’s advantages. Emailing a teacher with a question is not the same as going in and asking in person, and having the teacher answer and explain in front of the student. I think it would be most effective for the class to meet once a week, to go over any important topics and to ask any questions. The remainder of the course would be online. There’s also some classes that can’t effectively be taught online, like any sort of art, drama, video production, etc class. Any class/subject that requires hands on experience wouldn’t benefit from an online classroom.

I love the idea of online school. Maybe not for Kindergarten and Elementary school, since that’s the time for learning how to interact with people and learning the basics, but for Middle school and high school, this seems like a nice idea. However, the internet can shut down, or people can cheat, so it does have it’s flaws.

Besides the fact that online classes may cost less than attending an actual class, online classes doesn’t seem to be a very good idea. For certain classes, it would be okay. However, learning from something online is never good as being able to listen to a teacher in class, ask questions, or get further explanations on the subject. Whereas – online you don’t get the same type of interaction.

I think online education is helpful for certain courses, but other courses benefit from having a teacher-classroom set up. Driver’s ed online works just fine and it is more convenient for teenagers working towards getting their driver’s license. Physics and math, however, I think are better when they have a teacher to show students examples and demonstrations.

There are pros and cons to this idea. There are some people that are disabled to go and sit in a classroom and online would help them get through school from home. Or some learn better online than in a classroom environment. But they do tend to miss out on on human interaction and don’t have a chance to ask questions.

I believe that online education has many benefits. Everybody owns some kind of computer nowadays so having a computer isn’t a problem. It’s very convenient for people who do not want to leave their house and has many options on things you can learn. It is also a good way to save money and get a good education out of it. But in my opinion, actually being in a classroom might help the student learn better.

Online classes are definitely more flexible than traditional classes, but their test scores are usually lower. Part of the reason may be that people learn better with a professor giving a lecture in person rather than online. However, for lower GED classes, online classes will save students lots of money.

I think taking classes online is a great thing for the people that are antisocial or even just to lazy to go to a class. What if they don’t have a car or gas money and their school is too far to ride a bike. Why waste your time stressing about being late to class when you can take it anytime at home.

I believe that online courses are controversial. It would be easier for the students and the teachers to resort to online courses, but the problem is that the internet isn’t reliable and may disconnect at any time, especially during an important lesson, which wouldn’t be optimal. The traditional method of teaching lets you stay in class, but when it comes to sickness there’s no way around it.

I think that its can be both a good and bad thing. On the good side, you can have more time for other things, and possibly less distractions. On the bad side, you can’t have a real classroom experience. You won’t meet new people or listen to potentially interesting lectures. It is also easier to cheat on work. Online learning is convenient though.

Online education seems to be taking off which is a good thing. The traditional system of going to class and having a strict school schedule does not seem efficient in today’s getup and go world. Online education is beneficial in allowing people to attend college and work full time or have a family. Most of the benefits are for people whose lives are already full and need school to work around them and that is exactly what it does. If it could be expanded to meet everyone’s requirements and needs then al the better.

A pro would be that students can work at their own pace, but a con would be that students don’t have access to teachers and professors first hand to ask questions. The problem with having a lot of kids take classes online is what it will do when they start entering the work force. They won’t be use to having a set schedule if when they have to do assignments by and won’t be use to having a human direct them in their work. They will have lost the human contact factor that can be key in business communication. This will also cause children who can’t afford online classes to fall behind in their education compared to those who can. Public school kids will than have a harder time getting into colleges and getting higher paying jobs. PLus, kids already spend to much time in front of screens these days. Do we really need to shut them off from the rest of the world even more. Going to school allows them to leave their home and interact with others.

Online education is a good idea in theory, but I don’t think it should be used for K-12 students. Young children go to school not only to learn but also to develop critical social skills that they will need later in life. Online education is not a sufficient substitute for the school day, where children have the opportunity to socialize with their peers and get help from their teachers when they need it.

Online education is a great idea, and is a great tool, but for K-12 students I don’t feel that online education can be a main method of learning. The attention spans of kids are deteriorating and online education at early stages in life won’t do good for these kids. Kids need to learn to socialize, interact, and learn common everyday practices. Working together with others, learning to problem solve and building personal relationships with others is very important early in a child’s life. Only in high school do I think online education can even begin to become really involved in the learning process, and even so in the minority of learning methods. After much life has been experienced and young adults can be responsible for themselves and their work should be the only time to have online education be accessible for the bulk of their learning.

Online education can be a good substitute for students who are unable to go to a public or private school for various reasons. However, there is a trade-off, Those who a use online education maybe missing out on vital social skills that a typical student develops through a regular K-12 school. But the lack of social interaction with other people can be combated with the help of parents. Parents could possibly enroll their child or children in many different extra-carricular activities.
