I had very high expectations because of this show, and unfortunately, my experience was very uneven. The atmosphere is lovely, and the service attentive. I did the five course tasting menu to try as many things as possible. The first dish was superb, but then I unfortunately had the cassola, which had an overpowering fishiness to it. The fishiness suffused the sauce and affected everything that came after. The gnocchi that came after was more like soup, the gnocchi had so little body to it, it almost dissolved. The two dishes that followed were average, but my enjoyment might have been improved by something to cleanse the palate after the cassola (which I ordered for the crab which was the first ingredient on the menu and wasn't in the cassola). I couldn't help noticing as we left that another patron had ordered a cassola with the same overpowering fishy smell - it hit me across the room as an unpleasant endpoint to the meal.

The cost aside, I wasn't impressed. Add to that the hefty price tag, I feel let down by this glowing review.

I did try to call afterward just to give feedback. I'm a foodie, I appreciate that things can go wrong. I tried to be kind but direct. The person on the other end was defensive and really kind of rude. He didn't really want to hear the feedback, and told me basically that he wasn't interested in talking and, "You do what you have to do." I hadn't really thought of writing a review, but that doesn't bode well when a restaurant (such an expensive one, too) doesn't even take person-to-person private feedback.

It was a special occasion for me, and we all left disappointed. We had a much better dining experience at Pasta Moon earlier the same day.

Hello! It's Kevin here - the guy the people who commented think is rude. I am so surprised that people thought I was rude and disrespectful. I was being honest. I love restaurants (as you can see from my bear size body) and I really wanted to like all the restaurants. And I did point out things I liked about each of the other restaurants - like those great corn tortillas and the friendly owner from La Mexicana and the tasty and beautiful jalapeno dish at Kabuto. But I had to say that I am not a fan of all of that sauce put in at the mexican restaurant and the indifferent service and dirty counter space (with dishes still on it) at Kabuto. Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors as we all have different tastes. So perhaps people who don't like a little of sauce over their mexican food will agree with me and others will agree with Bill. But I think I got along really well with the other two guests and we even talked a bit after the show. So I am actually a bit sad right now to think someone thinks I am rude as I am a nice person...just need to be honest.

Listened to the show on the radio, although I have not eaten at any of the restaurants mentioned I was put off by the negativity of the women reviewers. Sapore sounds like a great restaurant and I will be sure to try them out despite their negative reviews.

In November 2005 Michael (above) wrote a comment that proved to be right on the money :O) Your fabulous show is tremendously popular. Lucky lucky me, avid PBS supporter, who moved here approximately 4 months before the show started. I cannot tell you how much I love the information and entertainment you have provided me. Thank you thank you thank you for Check, Please! Bay Area. Here's to many more years of suggestions from the locals, many more years of success Cheers

I agree with the above tasteful comments. What in the world are you tasting? When I saw thatI agree with the above tasteful comments.
When I saw that they served American cheese, I was ready to turn around, but I'd made a special trip, so I soldiered on.

I had a decent burger, (without mayonnaise, of course), made with sugary, soggy bread. I took a bite. The hamburger really didn’t need added water and there was nothing which tasted like a tomato, so I removed the cardboard tomato-like thing on top and the meat flavor bloomed a bit.

Then, tasteless fries. I don't use condiments so perhaps the fries were at a disadvantage, not being used as a corn syrup conduit.

Now, the Twinkie milk shake is simply insulting. If you like it, fine. But think about it please. They boast of their hand made Shakes with premium Ice Cream and then, just cause they’re creative, add:

Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour [Flour, Reduced Iron, B Vitamins (Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic Acid)], Corn Syrup, Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Water, Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable and/or Animal Shortening (Soybean, Cottonseed and/or Canola Oil, Beef Fat), Whole Eggs, Dextrose. Contains 2% or Less of: Modified Corn Starch, Glucose, Leavenings (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Baking Soda, Monocalcium Phosphate), Sweet Dairy Whey, Soy Protein Isolate, Calcium and Sodium Caseinate, Salt, Mono and Diglycerides, Polysorbate 60, Soy Lecithin, Soy Flour, Cornstarch, Cellulose Gum, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Sorbic Acid (to Retain Freshness), Yellow 5, Red 40.

Adding fake Twinkie “Creme”, to the real cream in the milkshake is simply grotesque, wouldn’t you say?

Twenty years as sous chefs and they create this. Guys, that thing in the middle of your head, it called a tongue and palate. It’s for tasting. Please use it. You’ll thank me later.

I hate to think where we’d be if we hadn’t had a ‘food revolution’.

>>2009 Mark West Pinot Noir, California $12
A must-buy bargain bottle that captures Pinot's elegance and juicy red-berry fruit flavors at a price that will please.
After trying three bottles of this ...two were corked and the other was the taste of a musty, funk old barrel Syrah with minimal pinot flavors......ewww

Agree with comment above on Sapore. My family and I have been treated super well from day one and now we go there at least twice a month as a result.

Rustica is to die for, pizzas always hot and tasty with that sweet tomatoes.

Elio is extremely hospitable and Massimo is a lot shyer and retiring. Check out their yelp review for the real public validation of this great place.
