I used to dine at Oliveto several times a year, but about 4 years ago, I took an old friend to lunch there to celebrate her birthday. I had previously truly enjoyed every experience there, excepting the noise level, but after that day, I've never been back.

While the food was good, the service was so desultory and inefficient -- and rude, I've never been back. It's off my list. If I'm going to pay a lot of money for a dining experience, I expect good food and exemplary service. The waiter argued with me regarding my order; my companion confirmed my order for him, but he argued with her too.

He dropped items on the table and never checked in to see if we wanted something else -- more water, bread...nothing. And he loitered in the back, but within view -- the restaurant was almost empty, as it was a late lunch. There were two servers for 6 or 8 tables of 2 to 4. Not a busy service time.

I complained to the hostess about the service, making clear that the food was not the issue, on the way out, and while she seemed sympathetic, I had no indication that she would feel compelled to report the issue to the managers.

Until I have confirmation that the service has improved, I most certainly won't return, either downstairs, where I had also received fairly poor and disinterested and almost unfriendly service, and certainly not upstairs, where I don't intend to pay high prices for such poor service. Maybe it's changed, but until I know it has, my dollars will go elsewhere. The front of the house surely needed improvement on my visit; sounds like they haven't quite fixed that.
