Wine of the Week:

2004 Kenwood Merlot Sonoma, California $17
Merlot is about smoothness and this wine is just that — supple and soft. Stock up on the wine by the case as it goes with just about any dish on the table from fish to meat.

What to Sip: Sonoma-Meritâge Martini Oyster Bar & Grill

For a restaurant that includes “martini” in the name, you might want to start your meal with one of their signature Cosmos, Chocolate Truffle Martinis, or a French Kiss (hey, it’s simply Ketel One Vodka with Chambord and a squirt of lemon juice). Since the restaurant also has Sonoma in the name, you might expect their wine list to focus on local specialties and it does. White wine drinkers can sip the Landmark “Overlook” Chardonnay ($45) made in a buttery, oaky style. It pairs beautifully with rich fish dishes. The superb Sonoma bubbly house of Gloria Ferrer is highlighted with their Blanc de Noirs poured by the glass ($7). Kunde’s Sauvignon Blanc is also a top by-the-glass option ($7) and both are ideal with you — guessed it — oysters.

    this seemed like one of the weaker ‘check please’ episodes. for one thing, there was too much agreement. the best episodes are when there are big disagreements which makes the show much more fun & entertaining. also, the people on this show seemed the least ‘foodie’ people of any show i’ve seen. while it’s great to have novices, i think the best shows have a combination of food snobs and common everyday people. this ensures a lively show. let’s get some lively discussions.

    Hi,
    I watch CPBA all the time. Have lived in SF for 7 years, and eaten all over the city. Some of our favorite places have come from this show. HOWEVER,
    Gus, who was from Nevada and said he could get a good cut of beef at any casino (I’m still shuddering over this comment, as I have eaten at many of the casinos and few of them would I get beef) was WAY OFF. The best steak on the strip, if you are going to bring up Vegas, is Smith and Wols, a chain btw. That being said, HOPR is a great place for beef. There are some great steakhouses here in SF, Alfred’s is one, and I will pay for good beef. He called it pricey, and over the top, which tells me he doesn’t eat that much beef. Prime Rib is one of the more succulent cuts, so eating it you are walking into a caloric orgy. Calling it over the top artery clogging is stating the obvious. I found his comments to be pedestrian, and trite. If you didn’t like it just say so, otherwise keep comparing it to Casino beef is blasphemy. HOPR is one of the best deals in town, and the beef is choice.
