    After watching the show tonight, I’m totally sold on this place and will make a special trip on BART over to East Bay to eat there. I’ve had plenty of “regular” Indian food from London curry houses to sous vide packages from Tasty BIte and, while i like it, it’s all teh same. Time to try something new! Sounds so awesome!

    I tried Viks Chaat on a Saturday arond 12:30. If this were a Chronicle movie review, the little guy would hve vacated his seat.

    The facility reminds me of an old neighborhood theatre that shows foreign and Sony Classic films. The difference is that at least the neighborhood theatres usually presents quality products.

    Viks offers an independent auto mechanic exterior with a thrift store furnished interior, complete with bad lighting and generally unkempt atmosphere.

    The order taker/cashier had the PR ability of a DMV clerk. “Just place the order and move to the next line”, was his body language and demeanor.

    The food preparers were hatless, capless, w/out hair nets and looked as though they patronized the same haberdasher as the cashier.

    A man with a wireless microphone beckons you when the order is ready,……..well not completely ready! He calls you when each plate comes up. For a first-timer it’s confusing. After 3 trips, he directed me back to the cashier to get the dessert, a oval shaped sweets with shaved coconut.

    Chicken Kathi Kabab, promised “cubed” boneless chicken. Something must have been “lost in translation”, although it was boneless.

    The Saturday special turned out to be an Indian version of fried rice. The fresh vegetables in the rice were fresh,………..fresh out of Bird’s Eye frozen perhaps! The diced carots and sliced green beans had the unmistakable look, texture, sized, and taste of Birds Eye, or maybe S & W.

    The other side dish reminded me of deep fried potatoe skins w/ garbanzo beans and curry.

    At least the beverages were satisfactory. We had a cans of Coke and Sprite!!

    I have noticed that more than a few of the show’s reviewers are fond of using the word “explodes”, as in the “flavors just explode in your mouth!”. Viks Chaat just “bombed” in my mouth.

    I once read a movie review that ended with, “a movie such as this is proof that there is no free parking at the movies”. Inexpensive eateries are just an expensive use of time and expectations.

    It is a travesty that this site does not already boast a litany of positive reviews for Vik’s. So, let me be the first. Vik’s is one of my absolute favorite spots in the Bay Area (right up there in terms of taste with other local Indian favorites like Breads of India, Ajanta, Dosa, and India Palace). It’s billed as “Indian Roadside Food” and accordingly is priced just right for weekly visits and a spontaneous decision to eat out. The atmosphere is also appropriately humble but supremely functional – “cafeteria-style” really is the perfect descriptor – and for anyone who has ever spent time out of the United States it evokes instant and fond memories of time spent discovering new scents, tastes, likes, and dislikes in foreign eateries. Popular with many Indian nationals it hums with a delightfully international buzz. To be clear, Vik’s is not and does not try to be like “Dosa” the new mission-hipster-hot-spot or “Ajanta” the sophisticated Solano eatery and I think most people can appreciate that there is room for more then one kind of Indian Restaurant in the bay area. The staff is always the same and will come to know, recognize, and greet you with joy. As for the food – Be sure to try the lamb samosas (weekend special only), which are truly devine! And, the colorful milk-based sweets (mango, pistachio, etc) featured like gorgeous jewls in a case at the front of the restaurant are as authentic as any I’ve ever had from Banglore. Yet they are much fresher and make the perfect compliment to a cup of piping hot Chai Tea. …Grab a friend, wind your way a slight hop from fourth street to Vik’s, and settle in for a delicious and comforting meal enjoyed in an authentic and casual environment!

    I think the key to Viks is coming with an open mind. You must be ready to eat roadside Indian food, and I have yet to be disappointed. There are very few places where you can see 3 generations of an Indian family enjoying traditional Indian food next to a hippy. Yes you eat with a “spork” and tables are hard to find, but that is part of the charm.

    If you are going there to “see and be seen” and eat skinless boneless chicken breast you will be disappointed. But if you want traditional Indian food, come check it out.

    Vik’s offers the Camelot of Chaat- with both noble & populous appeal. Cholle bhatura is designed to inspire a love of garbanzos, Chicken Kathi Kabab and its special dipping sauce are very delicious. As is Masala Dosa or anything else with coconut chutney. If food is an art that nourishes, Vik’s calls you by name, and if you are a regular, it’s quite delightful to be recognized when your name is called. If food is love, Vik’s is your family.
