Governor Jerry Brown was once famous for declaring an "era of limits," and today's news conference on a bipartisan jobs agreement brought to mind that classic quip in that the news was, well, limited: Brown's announcement reached half a deal... yes in the Assembly, not yet in the Senate.

"We celebrate small victories," said Brown with a twinkle in his eye.

One wonders how much longer the relatively civil political climate that's dominated state politics these last few weeks can continue.

In fact, there's a case to be made that it ended Monday night... when Governor Jerry Brown publicly prodded legislative Republicans, and they quickly fired back.

It's a tired old adage that "It's always darkest just before dawn," and yet that's the usual course of summer budget impasses here at the state Capitol. Just when the problem seems most unfixable, a deal is struck and everyone shakes hands.

But this summer's dark phase, which now seems to have arrived, feels different. The battle lines seem to be holding. And the smart money seems to be on a longer, not shorter, stalemate.

Points To Ponder While I'm Away

You won't see any blog postings or Twitter missives this week, nor will you hear any pithy podcasts or radio reporting.

I'm on furlough, part of KQED's plan to save money in these tough economic times. My feeling is that one week without pay is a lot better than 52, and given I believe in the mission of public media, I'm willing to do my part (but I encourage any of you who so desire to do yours, too).

But it got me to thinking -- what would I be watching and reporting about were I on the job this week? And so here's a sampling... as I instead turn to my long suffering list of home improvement projects. See ya next week.

Maldo Moves To Round Two

By the time today's confirmation hearing for Abel Maldonado began, multiple sources had already tipped us off that the GOP senator was going to clear his first hurdle towards becoming lieutenant governor.

But what we didn't know was how emotional the 42-year-old would be, or how often Democrats would seek to push the first generation American on whether his record as a legislator has helped, or hurt, others who aspire to rise from similar meager beginnings.
