Maybe it's just me who's noticed that the state's projected budget deficit of $26.6 billion lines up nicely to the miles run in a marathon, the time honored gut-check of road races.

And yet, this race is being run as though it were a sprint in these early weeks of 2011... one that, if the math pans out, hit roughly the halfway mark this week.

On this week's Capital Notes Podcast, we sift through the remains of the big budget votes this week, in search of some sign of a course map for the rest of this marathon.

Anthony York of the Los Angeles Times and I also consider some of the macro themes worth watching for this weekend's state GOP convention here in Sacramento.
