Podcast: Schwarzenegger Speaks

BUDGET DAY PLUS 72 -- The longer he talked, the more angry he got.

It's an odd time for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The longer the budget impasse lasts, the harder it seems to cajole legislators to come up with some kind of spending plan he likes.

But at the same time, he's the person the public can most identify with the state government that's tied up in knots.

This week, an early edition of the Capital Notes Podcast, featuring Wednesday's full interview with the governor inside the suite of his offices at the state Capitol. Our conversation focuses entirely on the state budget, with a brief mention of the recall petition to remove him from office, filed this week by the California Correctional Peace Officers Association.

Schwarzenegger Interview

While there's no official movement on the budget, it should be noted that the midweek point was marked by an intense flurry of reports from inside the Capitol that wheeling and dealing is underway, and some budget watchers are now making sure their weekend calendars are clear.

With that, here's my full interview with the governor... beginning with a discussion about whether the signature issue he ran on in 2003 -- the state's fiscal problems -- was tougher to solve than he expected.
