I know I am late coming to this but since I stumbled upon on the article only today, I just wanted to thank you for covering our little hood so nicely. I have lived here over 5 years and watched most of these newer places spring up around me. There's never been a more delicious time to be living here. I second the recommendations for Sunday afternoons at the DP saloon, and for Moshi Moshi - you would be hard pressed to find a more gracious and charming and kind sushi host than Mitz.

Great article. We just moved to the Dpgpatch a couple of months ago and we have been loving it!! Just for You, Serpentine, Yield Bar, Hard Knox are favorites. I cannot actually wait for Monday to check out the Kitchenette. I cannot believe we have lived here a couple of month and haven't tried this place yet.

The Dogpatch is uber cool!

Thanks, Ms. Oliver. I appreciate the comment! I knew that they made their own biscuits and cornbread, but I actually did not know that they did their own white/wheat etc. So thank you so much for the correction. You're a fan as well, I take it?

To just make a few corrections about your Just For You review. They do make all their own bread; cinnamon raisin, whole wheat, traditional white, biscuits, and cornbread. This is in addition to the rolls they purchase from Acme to use on sandwiches. Also, the owners name is Arienne Landry, not "Adrienne" Landry.

After you've had your wonderful brunch at the resto's mentioned above, stop into The Dogpatch Saloon on Sunday for terrific pick-up live jazz. The music is great, no cover, but a two drink min and free snacks (including homemade chili) should hunger pangs re-visit. The joint is decades old and looks it. Perfect ambiance for Sunday post-brunch jazz and blues.

BTW, the soul food at Hard Knox is sub-standard, except for the fried catfish (really good) and the fried chicken (pretty good.) The yams are canned and the mac and cheese is an abomination. But it is cheap and filling, if that's your standard. Take it from someone whose Mom was a superb cook (including soul food.)

I work in the Dogpatch and my lunch usually comes from Just For You or Oralia's (new-ish sandwich spot, run by the New Spot family). Kitchenette, Serpentine and Piccino's (they have a lunch spot next door to the coffee bar) are a bit overpriced for what you get, especially for everyday lunches. There's also The Sandwich Shop at 3rd and 19th which is really good, though I hate to say I've kind of abandoned only because Oralia's is closer. Moshi Moshi is also pretty good.

Sorry about that , Stephanie. The hours are updated now. And yes, Roger: the piece certainly could have been much longer. I'm a Hard Knox fan for sure, and think they're doing pretty amazing (and inexpensive) Soul food. You're lucky to live so close!

Great article! We live in Dogpatch and love it. I agree with most of the writer's comments on the most noteworthy Dogpatch eating establishments, although it is worth mentioning that we also have a Mexican joint (The New Spot), a Southern Soul Food place (Hard Knox Cafe) and a sushi place (Moshi Moshi). Still, I feel that Dogpatch is bursting with potential.
Industrious and ambitious chefs, restaurateurs, & investors would do well to look into setting up shop here. Commercial spaces are available, the residents of the neighborhood are committed to it, and the UCSF Mission Bay campus is going to bring A LOT of people.

Hmm, I think something's missing from the hours you listed for Serpentine. You rave about the Sunday brunch, but don't give any opening/closing hours for Sunday. Please fix so we can all know when to come for our Red Flannel Hash! Otherwise, great piece.
