Hi James -- I wouldn't be remotely surprised if they used lard. Those ladies are pretty traditional with how they cook. I hope you enjoy your visit to La Super-Rica (although I can't see how you wouldn't) :-)

Lard is usually the key to creamy, tender tamales :) I'll have to try Super-Rica's on my next visit!

Hi Richard -- Sorry for letting out the secret! :-)

Hi Anita -- That Tamal Norteño looks amazing. I wish they'd open a second restaurant up here.

I agree! I don't know where all the hate comes from for this place; maybe people just get off on thinking they know better than Julia Child, or they like being contrary.

We ate at La Super-Rica on our drive home from L.A. a few weeks back and were blown away. The Super-Rica Especial was my fave, but the Tamal Norteño -- a daily special: pork filling with a tomato/crema sauce (photo here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/marriedwithdinner/3757671863/) -- was terrific too.

Curses! You have let the secret out! ;)

La Super-Rica is a mandatory stop for myself and my family when we drive down to see our parents down south. You're absolutely right about the amazing Tamal de Verduras, and the the mystical magical #16.
