I've served cupcakes and regular cake at various parties for my children. The one thing I've noticed is that up until age 7 or so, the actual cake doesn't matter as they only eat the frosting. This is really irritating when you've spent an hour or two baking cakes from scratch. That said, I must admit that when you're giving a party for 10-20 screaming 5 or 6 year olds, the last thing you're worried about is helping the little tots come to grips with the fairness of life. And, there are always those kids who push to the front and ask first for the special flower, or whatever, but is that fair to the kid in the back who is patient and secretly wants the flower but is too polite to harass you for one? So then do you keep the flower for the polite child, or do you remember that the pushy kid is only a kid and so relent? And remember that all this is happening under the watchful eyes of parents attending also (yes, in this new age of controlling parents adults often stay at the party). Kids parties are a minefield. Sometimes making things egalitarian has its place.

This is hilarious! One of your best posts, as far as I am concerned. Coincidentally, I was planning on serving cupcakes at my toddler's birthday party, but now I must re-think it.

Let's hope prosperity is just around the corner for all of us!

Thanks for the laughs, Michael.
