I'm a Va. Beacher, too. Heartsick over what happened, because Tech was the other school I got into (went to ECU). Lots of friends/family are alum/current students, so it's hitting me hard. The memory of cracking crabs on picnic tables covered w/ newspaper and plenty of beer on ice helps a lot, so thanks.

Don't forget pork BBQ. My fondest culinary memory of Virginia is snarfing traditional Virginia-style BBQ: shredded not pulled pork, with a mild tomato base sauce, covered with cole-slaw on a plain white hamburger bun. Heaven!

My boyfriend grew up in Virginia Beach and we were just talking about the foods of his childhood last night... great subject in light of the terrible thing that happened.

I grew up in Virginia on the coast and I think you've pretty much hit on all the local foods - crab, oysters, flounder and other fish, salty ham. I remember, as a kid, going to u-pick days at the local strawberry fields and lugging home buckets, out hands (and likely mouths!) stained red.

The winemaking region in central VA is growing...when I was there, there was maybe one decent dessert wine from Barboursville, but now I hear there are several more incl the one you had at Maverick, which is amazing.

It's so weird reading about Tech in the news this way; to us, it was just another state school, one I almost went, in fact, back when I wanted to be a chemical engineer. My thoughts are with all of them.
